Digitalisation and Diversity?

Invited paper for Europe on Screen: Issues in the Future Distribution and Exhibition of European Cinema, University of Salford, June 2008

Digitalisation has produced massive availability of moving image material, which should be a positive development for European cinema and film culture generally. However, drawing on examples from the more 'alternative' end of the film sector, Julia Knight will argue that many of the issues about how we promote a more diverse moving image culture remain the same: even in the age of DVD and internet distribution, just as in the pre-digital era, not all films are equally accessible all the time, and being available does not guarantee films will be watched.
